Counselling
A Registered Psychological Counsellor is still a relatively new category which the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). It has been introduced in an attempt to make mental health services more widely available to the general public especially to those, who for economic reasons, often cannot afford to make use of professional services.
A psychological counsellor focuses on short term counselling and in cases where it is deemed necessary a referral will be made to a Psychologist or to a Psychiatrist. Registered Counsellors are not lay counsellors and have studied an average of 5 years towards their honours qualification in Psychology. All Registered Counsellors are also required to complete an internship in gaining practical experience.
After completing a board's exam counsellor's are then awarded a practise number, are eligible to claim from medical aids and to open their own practise.
